Former President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to start testing nuclear weapons to ensure the United States operates on an "equal footing" with its global rivals.

President Donald Trump announced this week that he has instructed the Pentagon, operating under the Department of War, to begin testing U.S. nuclear weapons “on an equal basis” with America’s global rivals.

The announcement came ahead of Trump’s highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday and was shared in a post on Truth Social.

“The United States possesses more nuclear weapons than any other nation,” Trump wrote. “This achievement, including the full modernization and renovation of our existing arsenal, took place during my first term in office. Because of their immense destructive power, I hated to do it — but had no choice!”

He continued, “Russia ranks second, and China is a distant third, though they’ll likely catch up within five years. Due to ongoing testing by other nations, I’ve directed the Department of War to commence testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately.
